These two images were taken with a Sony A-99 full frame camera using a Minolta 100 mm Macro lens. The single flower image was using ISO 400, 1/100 and F/2.8. The multi flower image was ISO 400, 1/200 and F/7.1. Both images were taken about on foot off the ground. I looked at all nineteen images taken on this shoot and the secret is in, as Jo told us, shoot on the same plane as the subject. I checked the focus on all images taken and found the most in focus images were taken straight into the flower and not from the side while viewing the flowers. I hope this gives you information to help yu shoot better.
